What does industrial pipe insulation cost in DFW?
Quick answer
Most jacketed pipe runs in the Dallas–Fort Worth market land between roughly $18 and $70 per linear foot installed — insulation, fabrication, labor and an aluminum jacket all in. Small-bore fiberglass sits at the bottom of that band; large high-temperature lines sit at the top. Every job carries a $1,500 minimum, because the survey, the benches and the crew cost the same to mobilize whether the run is twenty feet or a thousand.
What the per-foot number includes
The $18–70 per linear foot is the finished number, not a materials price. It covers the insulation itself — molded sections cut to your pipe size — the fabrication on our own benches, the crew that installs it, and the metal jacket that finishes it. Embossed aluminum jacket is included in the base price; it is not a line item that appears later.
Under the hood we estimate in dollars per square foot of finished jacketed surface, because that is what actually gets built: fiberglass runs $14–24 per square foot installed, mineral wool $16–28, calcium silicate $24–40, cellular glass $28–48, and aerogel $45–75. A foot of small pipe has less than a square foot of surface; a foot of 12-inch pipe with 3 inches of insulation has several. That geometry is most of why the per-foot band is so wide.

What moves the number up or down
Pipe size is the biggest lever: every inch of diameter adds jacketed surface to every foot of run. Temperature is the second, because it sets the thickness — we spec 1.5 inches up to 200°F, 2 inches to 350°F, 3 inches to 600°F, and 4 inches above that. Thickness multiplies the square-foot price: 1 inch runs about 0.9× the base band, 2 inches about 1.1×, 3 inches 1.3×, and 4 inches 1.5×. Material choice moves it too. Fiberglass is the cheapest R per inch and covers most lines to 850°F. Mineral wool and calcium silicate cost more and take more heat; cellular glass is the closed-cell choice for cold and buried work; aerogel earns its premium only where there is no room for anything thicker. On the jacket, aluminum is the included standard — stainless adds $5–9 per square foot, PVC saves about $2, and skipping the metal jacket entirely saves $4–5 but leaves the insulation unprotected.
Access is the quiet multiplier. A pipe rack at shoulder height prices at the bottom of the band; the same line 30 feet up over equipment needs lifts or scaffold, and that time lands in the per-foot number. It is also why the $1,500 minimum exists — a fifteen-foot job still takes a walk-down, a bench day and a crew on the road.
Removable covers price per cover, not per foot
Valves, flanges and anything that needs periodic wrench access get sewn removable covers instead of hard insulation, and those price each: roughly $220–460 per cover on 1–3 inch lines, $320–520 on 4-inch, $400–640 on 6-inch, $480–760 on 8-inch, and $620–980 on 12-inch. Bigger and hotter sits at the top of each range; a plain gate valve indoors sits at the bottom.
They are worth pricing even on an otherwise insulated system. A bare 6-inch gate valve loses about as much heat as four to five feet of bare pipe the same size, so a run with naked valves every fifty feet is quietly giving back a slice of what the insulation saved.
Why the cheapest bid can cost the most
Two bids can describe the same footage and not be the same job. Insulation performs at its worst gap: sections butted instead of staggered, seams left open a quarter inch, valves and flanges skipped "for access," jacket laps facing the weather. A tight job cuts the heat loss on a 350°F line by about 93 percent; a gappy one can leave a surprising share of that on the table — and the fuel bill pays the difference every month, for years.
Outdoors the gap between bids gets wider. A jacket with the laps facing into the rain takes on water, and wet insulation is worse than none — it holds the water against the steel and corrodes the pipe under the jacket. The cheap bid that skipped the sealing becomes a re-insulation job plus a pipe repair.
Ask any bidder the same three questions: are joints staggered and sealed, are valves and fittings covered or excluded, and which way do the jacket laps face. The answers cost nothing and separate the bids better than the bottom line does.
The cost is half the math — run the payback
Hot bare pipe burns money fast enough that the price rarely stands alone. As a rule of thumb, bare pipe at 350°F running around the clock costs about $75 per foot per year in fuel. The headline case: 200 feet of bare 4-inch steam line loses about 184,000 Btu per hour, roughly $15,000 a year in gas — and the job that stops it prices in the $8,000–14,000 range and pays for itself in under a year.
