- How thick should steam pipe insulation be? As a working rule: 1.5 inches up to 200°F, 2 inches to 350°F, 3 inches to 600°F, and 4 inches — sometimes in two staggered layers — above that. The rule sits at the conservative end of standard practice, thick enough that the last inch still pays for itself in fuel and the jacket surface stays safe to touch. Cold lines follow a different rule entirely: there the thickness is set by condensation control, not fuel.
- Removable insulation blankets or permanent insulation — which do I need? Permanent insulation goes on anything you will never open: straight pipe runs, tank shells, ductwork. Sewn removable covers go on anything that gets serviced, inspected or opened — valves, flanges, strainers, manways, autoclave doors. Most real systems need both, and the split is usually obvious once you walk the line: hard sections on the runs, a numbered cover on every point a wrench will ever touch.
