Removable insulation blankets or permanent insulation — which do I need?
Quick answer
Permanent insulation goes on anything you will never open: straight pipe runs, tank shells, ductwork. Sewn removable covers go on anything that gets serviced, inspected or opened — valves, flanges, strainers, manways, autoclave doors. Most real systems need both, and the split is usually obvious once you walk the line: hard sections on the runs, a numbered cover on every point a wrench will ever touch.
What each one actually is
Permanent insulation is the fixed system: molded sections or board cut to the surface, joints staggered and sealed, the whole thing banded under a metal jacket. Once it is on, it stays on until someone cuts it off. That is the construction on every straight run we do — the full detail is on the pipe insulation page.
A removable cover is a sewn product: an insulation core stitched inside high-temperature cloth, patterned to the exact valve or flange it fits, held on with straps and wire ties. It comes off in about a minute with no tools and goes back on the same way, as many times as you need it to. The efficiency trade
Hard insulation wins on pure numbers. A sealed, jacketed system recovers 93 percent or better of the heat a bare surface loses — two inches of mineral wool on a 350°F line cuts the loss about 93 percent and lands the jacket near 92°F. A sewn cover recovers around 85 percent, because a sewn product has seams and a fit-up gap that a sealed jacket does not.
That gap sounds like an argument for hard insulation everywhere. It is not, because on a serviced component the real-world alternative to a blanket is not hard insulation — it is bare metal. A bare 6-inch gate valve loses about as much heat as four to five feet of bare pipe of the same size. Eighty-five percent of that, recovered every hour the line runs, beats one hundred percent of nothing.
The lifecycle argument
Here is what happens to hard insulation on a serviced valve: the first time the valve needs repacking, the mechanic cuts the insulation off — there is no other way in — and it goes in the dumpster. Nobody orders a re-insulation for one valve, so it stays bare from that day on. Walk any plant and count the naked valves in the middle of insulated runs; each one is a hard cover that died at its first repair.
A sewn cover breaks that cycle. It comes off before the repair, sits on the floor during it, and goes back on after — and it does that for years. The same cover survives every packing job, every inspection, every seasonal opening. That is the real reason the split exists: it is not about which insulates better on day one, it is about which is still insulating in year five.
What each one costs
Permanent insulation prices by the square foot of finished, jacketed surface — fiberglass runs $14–24 installed with aluminum jacket, mineral wool $16–28, and typical jacketed pipe runs land around $18–70 per linear foot overall. Removable covers price per cover, by line size: roughly $220–460 for valves on 1–3 inch pipe, $320–520 at 4 inches, $400–640 at 6 inches, $480–760 at 8 inches, and $620–980 at 12 inches.
The payback math holds up on both. A dozen covers on 6-inch valves at 350°F running around the clock save about $5,400 a year, cost $4,800–7,700, and return their price in roughly 14 months — faster on hotter lines. How a hybrid line is laid out in practice
A real steam line gets both, and the layout writes itself. The straight runs get molded sections under a banded aluminum jacket. Every valve, every flange pair, every strainer gets a sewn cover, patterned so its ends overlap the adjacent hard insulation — the joint between the two systems is lapped, not butted, so there is no bare ring of steel between them. Tanks and autoclaves split the same way: hard insulation on the shell, covers on the manways and doors.
